ABSTRACT

In manned deep-space exploration, extremely isolated environments may adversely affect the mood and cognition of astronauts. Horticultural plants and activities have been proven to be effective in improving their physical, psychological, and cognitive states. To assess the effects of applying horticultural plants and activities in isolated environments, this study investigated the influence of viewing strawberry plants on the mood of people in a laboratory experiment as indicated by heart rate, salivary cortisol, and psychological scales. The results showed that heart rate and salivary cortisol were significantly decreased after viewing strawberry plants for 15 min. “Tension” and “confusion” scored using the Profile of Mood States negative mood subscales, and anxiety levels measured using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory scale were also significantly reduced. This study further explored the impact of viewing strawberry plants on cognition. A notable reduction of the subjects’ reaction time after 15-min plant viewing was observed. Based on these findings, a long-duration isolated experiment in a bioregenerative life support system—“Lunar Palace I”—was conducted. A similar trend was obtained that crew members’ mood states were improved by viewing the strawberry plants, but no significant change was observed. This study provided some experimental evidence for the benefits of interacting with strawberry plants in isolated environments.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Strawberries are highly perishable fruits, being susceptible to mechanical injury, decay and physiological disorders during storage. Applications of edible coatings have been shown to be promising as a tool to improve the quality and extend storage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of Aloe vera and sodium alginate as an edible coating in postharvest quality of cold storage strawberries. The composition of edible coatings of sodium alginate and A. vera (100: 0, 75:25, 50:50 and 25:75) was studied on weight loss, color, firmness, pH and titrable acidity of strawberries during refrigerated storage (0, 3, 9 and 12 days). The thickness and opacity of the films were also determined, from the coating forming solutions using the casting method. The short shelf life and the high deterioration of the quality characteristics of strawberries during postharvest, justify to investigate alternative conservation techniques such as edible coatings, in order to reduce food loss and improve consumer acceptance The results showed that the combination of Aloe vera and sodium alginate has a significant effect in the reduction of the loss of the quality of the fruit during refrigerated storage. All coating treatments showed at the end of storage less weigth loss (7-16%), greater firmness, (between 1,3 to 2,1 more times) more color retention and greater titrable acidity tan uncoated samples (Control). The addition of Aloe vera decreased the thickness of the films and the opacity decreased significantly with the addition of Aloe vera in 25 and 50% in the mixtures with sodium Alginate.

ABSTRACT

Runner tips explants of strawberry give rise to multiple shoots when cultured on MS medium supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of BAP with KIN or NAA or GA3.The highest response of shoot multiplication was obtained on MS containing 2.5 mgl-1 BAP + 0.5 mgl-1 Kin + 0.5 mgl-1 GA3. The maximum frequency of rooting (83%) and highest number of roots (3.49) was produced in medium containing 1.0 mgl-1 IBA. The well grown rooted plantlets were acclimatized and successfully established in autoclaved vermiculate soil and as well as natural condition. Using our established protocol, it is also possible to provide large numbers of micropropagated plantlets of this cultivars to produce high quality strawberry fruit for commercial cultivation practices.

ABSTRACT

While it is known that spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) initiate the production of male germ cells, the mechanisms of SSC self-renewal, proliferation, and differentiation remain poorly understood. We have previously identified Strawberry Notch 1 (SBNO1), a vertebrate strawberry notch family protein, in the proteome profile for mouse SSC maturation and differentiation, revealing SBNO1 is associated with neonatal testicular development. To explore further the location and function of SBNO1 in the testes, we performed Sbno1 gene knockdown in mice to study the effects of SBNO1 on neonatal testicular and SSC development. Our results revealed that SBNO1 is required for neonatal testicular and SSC development in mice. Particularly, in vitro Sbno1 gene knockdown with morpholino oligonucleotides caused a reduction of SSCs and inactivation of the noncanonical Wnt pathway, through Jun N-terminal kinases. Our study suggests SBNO1 maintains SSCs by promoting the noncanonical Wnt pathway.

ABSTRACT

The study was conducted to determine fungal communities associated to strawberry plant roots, densities of nematodes in fumigated soil and physico-chemical properties of soil in three commercial strawberry plots (Dlalha, Ouled Aguile and Gnafda) located in Gharb region and visited three times during 2013-2014 season. Under a slight variation of soil temperature and humidity with specific physico-chemical characteristics, a high infestation level of soil by nematodes was marked in the studied farms over the periods of sampling. The lowest number was observed in the first visit attaining 1000 units/g of soil, increased to 5000 units/g of soil in the second sampling period at one site and in the last visit, a significant decrease trend occurs for the big plot which the number of nematodes was reduced to 1500 units/g of soil. The analysis of fungal communities colonizing roots of strawberry plants showed the presence of 13 fungal species. Rhizoctonia solani presented a higher frequencies of isolation from roots of Festival variety reaching respectively 36% and 26.72% in the first and the second visits of Dlalha farms compared to those recorded in the second visit of Ouled Aguile (18%) and Gnafda (13.6%) farms. The Fusarium genus was represented by F. solani, Fusarium sp.1 and Fusarium sp.2 detected at frequencies not exceeding 7.08%. Those of C. gloeosporioides reached 12%, Phytophthora sp. (15.8%). In addition, the appearance of A. alternata, C. herbarum, Aspergillus sp., Circinella sp., Ulocladium sp. and Trichoderma asperellum was more frequent during the three sampling periods.

ABSTRACT

Background: Expansins play an important role in cell wall metabolism and fruit softening. Determination of expansin activity is a challenging problem since it depends on measuring cell wall properties by using ad hoc extensometers, a fact that has strongly restricted its study. Then, the objective of the work was to adapt a methodology to measure cell wall creep and expansin activity using a commercial texture meter, equipped with miniature tensile grips and an ad hoc cuvette of easy construction. Results: It was possible to measure hypocotyls acid growth and expansin activity in a reliable and reproducible way, using a commercial texture meter, common equipment found in laboratories of food science or postharvest technology. Expansin activity was detected in protein extracts from cucumber hypocotyls, tomato and strawberry fruits, and statistical differences in expansin activity were found in both fruit models at different ripening stages. Conclusions: The possibility of measuring expansin activity following this adapted protocol with a commercial texture meter could contribute to ease and increase the analysis of expansin in different systems, leading to a better understanding of the properties of these proteins under different experimental conditions.

ABSTRACT

Dieback in strawberry (Seolhyang cultivar) was first observed during the nursery season (June to September) in the Nonsan area of Korea in the years 2012 and 2013. Initial disease symptoms included dieback on runners, as well as black rot on roots, followed by wilting and eventually blackened, necrotic discoloration in the crowns of daughter plants. A fungus isolated from the diseased roots, runners, and crowns is close to Lasiodiplodia theobromae based on morphological characteristics. Analysis of a combined dataset assembled from sequences of the internal transcribed spacer and translation elongation factor 1-alpha genes grouped nine fungal isolates with the type strain of L. theobromae. The isolates showed strong pathogenicity on strawberry cultivars Kumhyang, Seolhyang, and Akihimae, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Based on these results, the pathogen responsible for dieback on strawberry plants in Korea was identified as L. theobromae.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The histochemical analysis of pollen grains through the use of stains makes it possible to determine their pollen viability. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficiency of 2% acetic orcein and Alexander’s stain modified, in estimating the pollen viability of twenty strawberry guava accessions (Psidium cattleianum Sabine) – a valued fruit tree which is used for medicinal purposes. Pre-anthesis flower buds were collected and fixed in ethanol:acetic acid (3:1 v/v) for 24 hours at room temperature, subsequently they were stored in 70% ethanol under refrigeration. The anther squash technique was performed for slide preparation. In each accession two slides per stain and 500 pollen grains were analyzed. The pollen viability was estimated according to the percentage of viable pollen grains. Overall, it was observed that pollen grains stained with 2% acetic orcein evinced a high viability, higher than 98,1%, and the accessions did not differ. The pollen viability estimated with Alexander’s stain varied from 43% (accession of Silveira Martins 1) to 97% (accession of Candelária 1), indicating that there is probably genetic variability among the accessions. There was no significant difference among the levels of viability found by means of the two stains in only two accessions. In conclusion, 2% acetic orcein overestimated the pollen viability of P. cattleianum, whereas the Alexander’s stain is in turn more accurate due to its two stains (green malachite and fuchsine). Thus, it is indicated Alexander’s stain for analysis estimation of pollen viability of strawberry guava genotypes involved in a genetic improvement program.

ABSTRACT

Background Strawberries are non-climacteric fruits with a low respiration rate, but are subject to serious fungal deterioration during postharvest handling. The edible coatings based on chitosan (CH), quinoa protein-chitosan (Q/CH) and quinoa protein-chitosan-sunflower oil (Q/CH/SO) may provide a solution to this problem. Thus, in this work CH, Q/CH and Q/CH/SO were elaborated and applied to fresh strawberries, and its effect on the strawberries shelf life during storage for 15 d was evaluated by mold and yeast count, fungal decay, carbon dioxide rate, physicochemical properties, and sensory evaluation. Results On all analysis days, the strawberries coated with the film-forming CH, Q/CH and Q/CH/SO solutions presented a significant lower amount of mold and yeast growth than the uncoated strawberries. Coated strawberries with Q/CH/SO decreased the CO2 emission rate by 60% compared to the uncoated strawberries. The color of the strawberries was not influenced by the films. There was no significant difference between the different coating groups and the uncoated group in the physicochemical parameters. Sensory analysis showed that the coating application retained the total sensorial quality. Conclusions Fresh strawberries coated with CH, Q/CH/SO and Q/CH edible films had longer shelf lives than uncoated fruits.

ABSTRACT

Blossom blight in strawberry was first observed in a green house in Nonsan, Damyang, and Geochang areas of Korea, between early January to April of 2012. Disease symptoms started as a grey fungus formed on the stigma, which led to the blossom blight and eventually to black rot and necrosis of the entire flower. We isolated the fungi purely from the infected pistils and maintained them on potato dextrose agar (PDA) slants. To test Koch's postulates, we inoculated the fungi and found that all of the isolates caused disease symptoms in the flower of strawberry cultivars (Seolhyang, Maehyang, and Kumhyang). The isolates on PDA had a velvet-like appearance, and their color ranged between olivaceous-brown and smoky-grey to olive and almost black. The intercalary conidia of the isolates were elliptical to limoniform, with sizes ranging from 5.0~10.5 x 2.5~3.0 microm to 4.0~7.5 x 2.0~3.0 microm, respectively. The secondary ramoconidia of these isolates were 0- or 1-septate, with sizes ranging betweem 10.0~15.0 x 2.5~3.7 microm and 8.7~11.2 x 2.5~3.2 microm, respectively. A combined sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer regions, partial actin (ACT), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF) genes revealed that the strawberry isolates belonged to two groups of authentic strains, Cladosporium cladosporioides and C. tenuissimum. Based on these results, we identified the pathogens causing blossom blight in strawberries in Korea as being C. cladosporioides and C. tenuissimum.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the effect of nitrogen doses on postharvest diseases of strawberry cultivars Camino Real, Festival and Oso Grande. The nitrogen in urea formulation was evaluated at the recommended dose (100%) based on the official recommendation to the culture, and 3 lower doses (83, 67 and 50% of recommended), considering the fertilization at planting and cover applications. Fruits were harvested and weighed at 75% of its surface with a bright red color. Twelve fruits per plot were sampled in 3 collections from the second flowering and assessed for disease incidence during five days of storage at 25°C and 85% relative humidity. The identification of disease was made daily, based on symptoms and pathogen signs. There was no effect of nitrogen doses on yield and incidence of postharvest diseases, expressed as area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC). Increased average production was observed in cultivars Festival and Oso Grand. The overall incidence of disease among the cultivars did not differ significantly. Gray mold was the main disease, affecting more than 30% of fruits, followed by Rhizopus and yeast rot.(AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cadmium (Cd) is well known as one of the most toxic metals affecting the environment and can severely restrict plant growth and development. In this study, Cd toxicities were studied in strawberry cv. Camarosa using pot experiment. Chlorophyll and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities and mineral nutrient concentrations were investigated in both roots and leaves of strawberry plant after exposure Cd. RESULTS: Cd content in both roots and leaves was increased with the application of increasing concentrations of Cd. We found higher Cd concentration in roots rather than in leaves. Chlorophyll a and b was decreased in leaves but MDA significantly increased under increased Cd concentration treatments in both roots and leaves. SOD and CAT activities was also increased with the increase Cd concentrations. K, Mn and Mg concentrations were found higher in leaves than roots under Cd stress. In general, increased Cd treatments increased K, Mg, Fe, Ca, Cu and Zn concentration in both roots and leaves. Excessive Cd treatments reduced chlorophyll contents, increased antioxidant enzyme activities and changes in plant nutrition concentrations in both roots and leaves. CONCLUSION: The results presented in this work suggested that Cd treatments have negative effect on chlorophyll content and nearly decreased 30% of plant growth in strawberry. Strawberry roots accumulated higher Cd than leaves. We found that MDA and antioxidant enzyme (CAT, SOD and APX) contents may have considered a good indicator in determining Cd tolerance in strawberry plant.

ABSTRACT

A comprehensive in vitro study involving antiglycation, antioxidant and anti-diabetic assays was carried out in mature fruits of strawberry. The effect of aqueous extract of mature strawberry fruits on glycation of guanosine with glucose and fructose with or without oxidizing entities like reactive oxygen species was analyzed. Spectral studies showed that glycation and/or fructation of guanosine was significantly inhibited by aqueous extract of strawberry. The UV absorbance of the glycation reactions was found to be maximum at 24 hrs. and decreased consecutively for 48, 72 and 96 hours. Inhibition of oxidative damage due to reactive oxygen species was also observed in presence of the plant extract. To our knowledge, antiglycation activity of strawberry fruit with reference to guanosine is being demonstrated for the first time. To determine the antioxidant activity of the plant extract, in vitro antioxidant enzymes assays (catalase, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and ascorbic acid oxidase) and antioxidant assays (DPPH, superoxide anion scavenging activity and xanthine oxidase) were performed. Maximum inhibition activity of 79.36%, 65.62% and 62.78% was observed for DPPH, superoxide anion scavenging and xanthine oxidase, respectively. In antidiabetic assays, IC50 value for alpha – amylase and alpha – glucosidase activity of fruit extract of strawberry was found to be 86.47 ± 1.12μg/ml and 76.83 ± 0.93 μg/ml, respectively. Thus, the aqueous extract of strawberry showed antiglycation, antioxidant and antidiabetic properties indicating that strawberry fruits, as a dietary supplement, may be utilized towards management of diabetes.

ABSTRACT

The objective was to evaluate the conservation of strawberries with coatings based on xanthan gum and, or, sage essential oil. The strawberries were minimally processed, added with coatings, dried under ventilation, packaged in trays of polyethylene terephthalate and stored at 4 °C for 12 days. Analyses of fungal decay, weight loss, firmness, color, soluble solids and pH were carried out, and at the end of storage, fungi and yeasts count as well. Regardless of the coating, mass loss of strawberries was reduced during the refrigerated storage period. However, the coatings based on xanthan gum indicated to be more efficient, by providing greater fruit firmness, while those containing xanthan gum and sage essential oil were the ones which provided the lowest incidence of fungi. In general, the coatings did not affect the color and pH of the strawberries.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the curative effect and adverse reactions through Cynergy dual wavelength laser to cure skin vascular pathological changes in children. Methods Cynergy dual wavelength (595 nm and 1064 nm) laser were used to treat the skin vascular pathological changes in children (650 cases) including strawberry-shaped hemangioma (398 cases) and port wine stain (252 cases).Anergy density was 5-15 J/cm2 and 30-80 J/cm2.The curative effect and adverse reaction and also the relationship between the port wine stain curative effect and the age of patient, location, and colour of skin lesions were analyzed. Results In total 650 cases after 3-7 times treatments under suitable pulse width and energy density, the curative effect for strawberry-shaped hemangioma was 92.2 %,that for pink type port wine stain was 77.9 %,that for purple type port wine stain was 38.9 %,and that for thickening type port wine stain was 14.3 % ; the overall adverse reaction rate was 2.3 %.After test with x2 analysis, the curative effect of port wine stain also varied depending on the age of patient, location, and colour of skin lesions. The younger the age of patient and shallower of colour of skin lesions, and the better the curative effect. The curative effect for location around the eyes was better than frontal face and limbs. Conclusions Application of Cynergy dual wavelength laser in treatment of the skin vascular pathological changes in children has notable curative effect and low adverse reaction. It is a new curative technology and also safe and reliable. It is worthy of popularization and application.
